Chanel Iman
I remember when Chanel dropped on to the scene. There was a time when I would never miss an America's Next Top Model episode, or the Tyra Banks show. And I def remember her on both shows once. Any ways she's definitely grown up, this picture is beautiful.
Finding Home #4: A Safe Place
When I first started this post it was all about how everybody hates me. I felt abandoned by alot of my close friends. Then I saw something on Instagram stating something along the lines of, " I asked god to get rid of my enemies, and I started losing friends." At that moment all of that hurt went flyng out the window. Now I'm not saying I was surrounded by enemies, but I do believe that not everyone in our lives are meant to stay forever.
There was this passage that I think comes from a Tyler Perry film, comparing friends to different parts of a tree. Some people are like the leaves when the wind blows they disappear. Some people are like the branches of a tree, and can seem safer until you take a step out on to a thin one and it breaks underneath you. But some people are like the roots of a tree. Sturdy and strong, those are the people you should hold on too. Those are the ones you can always count on.
I also think you should be one of those people in your own life that's like a root. In my own experience if I can be a safe place for myself I can be a much better safe place, or root, for others.

Keep a Poem in your Pocket: Marty McConnell
“because this is what you do. get up.
blame the liquor for the heaviness. call in late
to work. go to the couch because the bed
is too empty. watch people scream about love
on Jerry Springer. count the ways
it could be worse. it could be last week
when the missing got so big
you wrote him a letter
and sent it. it could be yesterday, no work
to go to, whole day looming.
it could be last month
or the month before, when you still
thought maybe. still carried plans
around with you like talismans.
you could have kissed him last night.
could have gone home with him, given in,
cried after, softly, face to the wall, his heavy arm
around you, hand on your stomach, rubbing.
shower. remember your body. water
hotter than you can stand. sit
on the shower floor. the word
devastated ringing the tub. buildings
collapsed into themselves. ribs
caving toward the spine. recite
the strongest poem you know. a spell
against the lonely that gets you
in crowds and on three hours’ sleep.
wonder where the gods are now.
get up. because death is not
an alternative. because this is what you do.
air like soup, move. door, hallway, room.
pants, socks, shoes. sweater. coat. cold.
wish you were a bird. remember you
are not you, now. you are you
a year from now. how does that
woman walk? she is not sick or sad.
doesn’t even remember today.
has been to Europe. what song
is she humming? now. right now.
that’s it.”

Twelve Things You Were Not Taught in School About Creative Thinking
- You are (by default) creative.
- Creative thinking takes work.
- You must go through the motions of being creative.
- Your brain is not a computer.
- There is no one right answer.
- Never stop with your first good idea.
- Expect the experts to be negative.
- Trust your instincts.
- There is no such thing as failure.
- You do not see things as they are; you see them as you are.
- Always approach a problem on its own terms.
- Learn to think unconventionally.

Take me away..
I've found myself back here on the last day of the month in the new year. In this moment I am so hopeful about the possiblitys of this year(and the rest of my life). I started the new year with one resolution: to learn to swim and travel to the Maldives after watching this:
But as always with me I'll find new things to do every month, week, day, or moment I'll to improve on the good that's already within me.Welcome 2012.

Video of the Day: Changing Education Paradigms
Hello class,
Lets begin today's lesson with this quote: "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." -Albert Einstein
Now watch this:
Then reading this here.
My thoughts/rambles:
When it comes to my schooling I've always felt frustrated. I've always felt like I was stupid because I couldn't learn the way I was "supposed" to be. If anyone was actually paying attention when I was younger they probably would have tried to slap an ADHD label on me but they weren't. Which I'm marginally thankful for fyi.
In my case since no one was paying attention I simple through up some walls and held up shop in my head. In the video above Sir Ken Robinson explains the difference between a aesthetic and an anaesthetic experience. With no one around to wake me UP I had a very anaesthetic experience in school.
Sir Robinson also talks about how the current system was made for a different age. When he said this I snorted loudly and through in a nice "NO SHIT" for good measure. I think it's been quite clear for sometime now that the way the educational system is set up isn't right. Now I feel like I should mention here since I'm hating on the system that I'm currently applying to go back to school(I've been out for one semester). Everyday I wake up and ask myself "Why?" I don't think that a formal education = a job in this day and age (actually I know it doesn't) BUT I'm holding on to the hope that:
- I'm not going to be waisting my time
- That some how, even if I don't get a degree, I'll learn something that can help me survive in this economy.
But enough about me. There are some key points that Sir Robinson said that I wanted to point out:
- Great learning happens in groups. Collaboration is the stuff of growth.
- Anaesthetic: shutting your senses off; deaden yourself to whats happening.
- We are getting our children through education by anaesthetising them.
- We should be waking them UP to whats inside of themselves.
Now class....what do you have to say?

Sunday Morning Music: Catherine Feeny
I was feeling very blue last week(or was it weeks?). It was very confusing to go to sleep one day literally vibrating with happiness, just to wake up and feel horrible! With no idea why. But that was then, and I'm feeling much better now!

Image Transferring try #2
Eureka! I did it (the girl is the transfer). I think the first time didn't work out because I used so much water to rub the image that I started to tear the paper and gave up. This time I when the paper looked like it might tear I waited until it dried a bit then went back in. There's a bit of tearing on the girls shirt but I like it.

A Glance at Last Week
Last week was ruff for me, but I tried to make the best of it. I've been trying to ride my bike more often. So when I needed to go into the city for some art supplies, but more importantly I wanted some cookies. I hopped on my bike to save some money(for cookies). The cookies didn't last long enough to be photographed sadly. It was such a beautiful night. These where taken on the Brooklyn bridge. This is the only bridge I like biking on even with the tourist that like to walk in the bike lane.
The art supplies: two Faber-Castell pens(XS, F) a white gel pen, and a Excel craft knife. I was using a sharpie but it wasn't working out. I love the Faber-Castell pens. I haven't find much use for the gel pen yet, but I'm sure I will!

Video of the Day: The Sketchbook Project 2012
I found this video about The Sketchbook Project over at ModCloth's blog. I love it! I'm defiantly going to be apart of the 2013 project! I'm just doing too much right now to take on anything else. I'm also defiantly going to visit the Art Co-op soon. It's only a 20 minute bike ride away after all!

I've seen Louis Mendes but never had my own camera to take his photograph. I'm glad I was finally able to capture him! He is a great photgrapher. Taken 10/16/2011.

"Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow..."
"Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the same well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can this be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain"....."When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy"..."Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed."
From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
When I first read this it didn't ring true to me. How can joy and sorrow be "inseparable"? A couple of days ago I was intensely happy, but before the day had ended I was intensely sad. When I sat and thought about it I realized that even when I was happy that sadness was still there, and vise versa. What this quote means to me is something I've always known. When you are sad happiness isn't far away(and vise versa).
